Shraavan is the fifth month of the Hindu year, beginning in late July from the first day of the full moon and ending in the third week of August, the day of the next full moon. Its geographical importance is that it marks the blooming, green period of monsoons, on which India’s agriculture and hence life is dependent. And its cultural significance is that it’s considered a holy month and people perform different pujas and fast to show their gratitude towards the higher calling for providing for them.

This poem has plenty of regional references that may not have any literal translations but I’ve tried to retain the essence of what Balkavi might have meant. He’s one of the greatest poets we know and there’s no match to his poetic ability. He describes variety of features of Shraavan in this poem using a lot of imagery.

Shraavan has arrived, I feel elated, it’s green everywhere
In a moment it brings a dash of rains, and in a split second there’s bright sunshine everywhere

I see up, above in the sky, and see a doubled weave of rainbow
And it looks like the arch of the sky has been decorated with holy flowers and their glow
In a moment it feels like the sun is setting and in another it shines again brightly
The tall tree tops and high risen houses get drenched in this sunshine completely

And the clouds bear infinite colours of the evening
The universe draws the boundless beauty into a picturesque painting

The flock of herons looks like a garland of white flowers
It looks like a string of planets is unanimously ascending to the Earth, its beauty it devours
The birds flap their wet wings and tidy up their sheen
Radiant does with their children, gallivant in the meadows green

The cattle enjoy their green meals, the shephered hum and wander
Their flutes, in union sing the songs of praise of the month’s wonder

The golden Champak blooms, the forest is filled with the fragrance of Kewra all around
The beaming of flowering of the night-jasmine, does calm *me down
Carrying a pretty basket, the innocent
Little girls, married women, pluck the flowers (for God) full of scent

And as they leave, (carry all the positivity with them) I cannot conceal this bliss of heaven
I must hear from them ,this poetic grandeur of Shravavan

**Here Bhama is Sattyabhama, Shri Krishna’s wife. There’s a story of these two where Sattyabhama was angry with her husband and when Shri Krishna brought her the flowers of Parijat (night-jasmine), she mellowed down and welcomed him. Here the same reference has been used in the original poem but the same cannot be accommodated in the translation.
