Thiago Silva, the Chelsea defender, has responded to criticism of his performance against Nottingham Forest with a social media post in which he tells a fan: “Put the pressure on me.”
Silva played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge by Forest on Saturday, which ended with the home supporters booing Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
A Chelsea fan account posted online to say that “it’s time to drop Thiago Silva” because “we have to play a back five to shoehorn him in”.
Silva then posted a reply to that message, leaving a comment on the Instagram post that said: “If you look closely at the game, we are playing with a line of four my friend!
“But there’s no problem in assuming that I’m also responsible for the defeat. Put the pressure on me. No problem yesterday.”
Tensions are rising at Stamford Bridge after a challenging start to the season in which Pochettino’s side have taken just four points from four league games.
Their struggles are reminiscent of last season, when Chelsea’s collection of new players were unable to find any consistency, and the pressure has only risen after a summer spend of almost £450 million.
Pochettino admitted following the loss that he sympathises with the Chelsea fans who booed his players off the pitch after Anthony Elanga’s winner secured three points for Forest.
“You can understand the people that came from the past, they want to see the team winning and playing well,” said Pochettino.
“We are not playing fantastically, but the performance is not bad. If we’d scored in the first few minutes, and we had two big chances, then maybe we’d have finished in a different way.
“But I understand, the fans want to win and we need to give the possibility to them to be happy and, yes, we need to keep working and we are going to be positive. I understand we are in Chelsea and we should win every single game.”
