He attended Port Jefferson High School before enrolling in Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism. During college, he worked as an intern at the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Public Affairs Office on Long Island.

He began his career as a desk assistant at KING-TV in Seattle, Washington, in 1987. He began his career as an anchor and reporter at WFLD-TV in Chicago, Illinois, and afterward at KCRA-TV in Sacramento, California. He spent seven years in New York, working at WNBC-TV, the NBC television network’s East Coast flagship station.

He worked at WNBC as a co-anchor of Today in New York, an early-morning local news and entertainment show.
