As the weather turns cooler, many people start thinking about when to turn the heating on – and whether it’s affordable in a cost of living crisis.

Even though the energy price cap is set to fall on October 1, which will cap the typical household bill at £1,923 compared to the current £2,074 in July, food and energy bills are still a struggle for many.

The government’s Winter Fuel Payment is designed to help eligible people to keep warm and pay their heating bills, and is in addition to any Cost of Living payments or other benefits.

So who is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment and how do you claim it?

Here is what you need to know.

How much is the Winter Fuel Payment?

The Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off payment between £250 and £600 to help with heating costs.

The amount you get is based on when you were born and your circumstances between September 18-24, 2023. This is called the ‘qualifying week’.

Who is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment?

Most people get the payment automatically if they’re eligible.

You do not need to claim if you get any of the following:

  • awards from the War Pensions Scheme
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Industrial Death Benefit

However, if you don’t get any of these benefits, were born before 25 September 1957 AND either of the following apply, you’ll need to claim:

  • you haven’t had the the Winter Fuel Payment before
  • you’ve deferred your State Pension since your last Winter Fuel Payment
